Brief History of Frenchtown, New Jersey

A Historic River Town in Hunterdon County

Frenchtown is a small river town along the Delaware River in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, with roots dating back to the early 1700s. Originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, the area later developed into a European settlement shaped by agriculture, river trade, and water-powered industry.

Milling, Trade, and the Nishisakawick Creek

By the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Frenchtown grew into an important commercial hub. Its riverfront location supported ferries and regional trade, while mill races—man-made channels supplied by the Nishisakawick Creek—powered gristmills, sawmills, and early manufacturing. This system helped define the town’s layout and economy.

Race Street and Frenchtown’s Industrial Core

Race Street, named for these mill races, became the center of Frenchtown’s industrial life. Buildings were constructed directly over or alongside the channels, embedding water-powered infrastructure into the town’s commercial core. During the 19th century, Frenchtown developed into a diverse working

community, including French-speaking Swiss and other European immigrants who influenced the town’s name and character.

From Mill Town to a Modern Community

As milling and river commerce declined in the 20th century, many historic buildings were adapted for new uses. Today, businesses such as Frenchtown Fresh / Frenchtown Subs, located at 2 & 4 Race Street, still sit directly above the original mill races fed by the Nishisakawick Creek—connecting the town’s present-day small businesses to its industrial past.
